Leica’ newly unveiled version 1.7 update to its LUX iPhone app includes the first in a new series of cinematic "Artist Looks" — essentially one-click filter presets designed to mimic the personal aesthetic of particular pro photographers. The first Artist Look was developed in collaboration with British photographer Greg Williams. His Artist Look is lightly inspired by Kodak Tri-X film, converting color photos to black and white, with the white point shifted a touch to make the whites slightly off-white and yielding a more vintage warm-tone feel, notes The Verge.

Timo Jarvinen, a celebrated surf photographer who worked with some of the sport’s finest athletes, including Kelly Slater, died on May 5 at age 60, notes Surfer magazine. Originally from rom Helsinki, Finland—“about as far as you can get from world-class waves,” adds Stab magazine—Jarvinen took up photography after borrowing his father’s Nikon F camera to shoot some snowboarding friends. His images ended up being printed in a magazine. “I get inspired by light and water – the shades, shapes and reflections in it,” he once said.

In 1994, Phil Borges, who had left a career in orthodontics to be a photographer, traveled to Tibet, northern India and Nepal to interview and photograph Tibetans and Tibetan refugees in an effort to understand what had happened to them and their culture. The result was a landmark photo book, The Power of Compassion. “It was very humbling to meet refugees, immigrants, and people who had to escape their country for fear of their life, and yet they seemed to be living in the moment,” he told My Modern Met in a recent interview.
