Scientists in China have scored a breakthrough in optical imaging technology with a camera system that is powerful enough to see the details of a person’s face from space. The technology, which uses a synthetic aperture lidar (SAL) system deploying laser beams and advanced processing technology to create high-resolution 3D images over long distances, has the potential to transform global surveillance. Beijing could potentially use it to scrutinize foreign military satellites, notes the South China Morning Post.

Coalition for Women in Journalism Thursday March 13, 2025
There was a sharp increase in attacks on women journalists in 2024, notes a new report from the Coalition for Women in Journalism. The newly released Women Press Freedom report notes that 951 press violations against women journalists were documented in 2024, marking a 56-percent increase from 2023.Twenty-one women journalists were killed, the highest number since the Women Press Freedom report began tracking instances of such violence in 2019. Turkey (128 violations), Russia (105), and Venezuela (45) were the top three countries with the most violations against women journalists, notes the report.

Now, notes CNN, his new book Backstage Dreams takes viewers behind the scenes of his shoots. “A good photograph can happen every single second, he says. “Either you sit around and have coffee and you wait for the action, or you don’t sit, you don’t have coffee. You just wander around with your camera and you open yourself to whatever is going on.”

Apple has updated its ultra-portable laptop, the MacBook Air, as well as its ultra-powerful desktop, the Mac Studio—the former getting the company's latest M4 chip, a price cut and a fun new color, while the latter is being billed as "the most powerful Mac ever.” The biggest upgrade for the MacBook Air is external display support—it can drive two 6K external monitors and its internal display, notes DP Review. Mac Studio gets new chips and can now drive eight 6K displays or four 8K displays.
