On Dec. 20, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act, notes the Sierra Club. It now heads to the desk of President Joe Biden to sign into law. Among other things, the bipartisan legislation will do away with requirements for permits for all “commercial” photography and filming in National Parks, notes PetaPixel. The bill’s passage came one day after photographers Alexander Rienzie, Connor Burkesmith, and the National Press Photographers Association filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service claiming these filming permit requirements violate First Amendment rights.

It’s cold outside, so dress appropriately when you go looking for night sky images this month. Start this weekend with the Quadrantids meteor shower (Jan. 3-4): There should be a great spectacle because the crescent moon will set early in the evening, leaving a gloomy sky, notes DIY Photography. Although they might occur anywhere in the sky, meteors will emanate from the constellation Bootes. This month also will feature interesting views of Venus and the full wolf moon on Jan. 13.

Bob Wick’s photos of lonely canyons, the northern lights and various wildlife have appeared in The New York Times, Outside magazine, on Patagonia’s website, and on a U.S. Postal Service stamp. While it’s impossible to say with certainty, notes Backpacker, Wick, a 33-year veteran of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, is a strong candidate for the most published outdoor photographer in the world. Ironically, photography wasn’t even in his job description when he started at the BLM. “[I]t was more of a collateral duty,” he says.
