Speaking to reporters recently, Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said the company’s moderation error rates "are still too high” and pledged to “improve the precision and accuracy with which we act on our rules.” Clegg’s comments suggest that, after years of ramping up to what is now billions of dollars in annual spending on moderation, Meta’s automated systems have become too ham-fisted, notes The Verge. “Too often, harmless content gets taken down, or restricted, and too many people get penalized unfairly,” Clegg noted.   Read the full Story >>

Books: An Archive of 1980s Partying, from the 'Camera Girl'

Outfitted with a Polaroid SX-70 camera and often dressed like a moll out of noir films, Sharon Smith spent the years between 1980 and 1988 photographing people at storied New York City dance clubs like Area, Roseland Ballroom, the Roxy and the Palladium. Along the way she also snapped stars like Iggy Pop, Madonna, David Bowie and Prince. Her Polaroids captured the fugitive spirit of a rip-roaring city in the days before AIDS laid waste to it, notes The New York Times. Industry News: DJI Avoids U.S. Ban

Chinese-owned TikTok may be facing a ban in the U.S., but Chinese-owned drone maker DJI is not: The Countering CCP Drones Act—bipartisan legislation passed in September that would add DJI to the list of communication equipment and services that pose a risk to the national security of the United States—was not included in the National Defense Authorization Act that Congress passed this week, meaning that for now DJI can sell products in the U.S.. Trending: Former OpenAI Researcher and Whistleblower Found Dead

Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI researcher who earlier this year went public with his concerns that the company had allegedly violated U.S. copyright laws in building its ChatGPT chatbot, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment recently, notes CNBC. Balaji, 26, was found after police were called to do a “wellbeing” check. According to an SFPD report, no evidence of foul play was discovered. The manner of death was later determined to be suicide.
