Books: Marvin E Newman's Midcentury Masterpieces

Marvin E Newman, had dreams of being a painter or a sculptor. Instead he became a photographer during the golden age of American magazines, The new book Marvin E. Newman  is the first  major career retrospective of a “remarkable midcentury street photographer, largely undiscovered beyond a prestigious collector and gallery circle,” notes publisher Taschen. The Guardian spotlights Newman’s 1956  study of women working at a drive-thru corn dog stand in Los Angeles, part of a series about California commissioned by Time/Life in 1966.   Read the full Story >>

Business Report: Music Photographers Up in Arms Over 'Rights Grab' Contracts

Music photographers are raising an alarm over “copyright grab” contracts  being enforced by major artists, reports PetaPixel.  One concert photographer, Steve Ritchie, says he pulled out of a Marcus King concert in London after being told he had to sign a contentious contract. “The contract dictates that the photographer must waive copyright to the photos taken at the concert and email all high-resolution copies within seven days of the gig. It even states that the photographer will 'waive all so-called ‘moral rights in the Photographs,'—meaning the photographer won’t even receive a credit, let alone get paid,” notes PPD.   Read the full Story >>

In Focus: Photographing How the World Eats

Turning 60, photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen realized that people are increasing disconnected from what they eat. “I grew up with seasonal vegetables. My mother took me to the butcher, he would take half a cow out of the chiller and slice off a cut of meat. I was much more conscious of where the food on my plate came from,” he tells the the British Journal of Photography. Van Lohuizen went on a journey of food discovery that took him round the globe. Projections: Helen Rimell, Blaise Tobias and Helen Garber, Nov. 13

Helen Rimell will share her documentary project about her mother’s mental illness; Blaise Tobias will showcase her inquiries into the nature of the photography; and Helen Garber will speak about her black-and-white images of urban landscapes, from New York to Paris and Venice.
