Spotlight: This Photographer Is Obsessed by Steel Making

Viktor Mácha’s day job is in real estate. But his true passion is steel making. For his epic  Beauty of Steel Project, he is photographing every steel mill he can get himself into, notes Forbes. So far he has taken more than 2,400 photographs of over 500 blast furnaces, steel mills, foundries, forges and rolling mills in 28 countries on five continents. In many cases, the plants he took pictures of shut down shortly after he visited. “After those 16 years, the steel industry has changed dramatically,” he said.   Read the full Story >>

State of the Art: Jimeng AI is a Text-to-Video App from TiKTok's Parent Company

The parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, has debuted Jimeng AI, a new text-to-video AI app that adds to the list of rivals for OpenAI’s text-to-video Sora platform, notes Reuters. Jimeng AI may also pave the way for a future where TikTok features a bevy of AI-generated videos: There is no direct link yet between Jimeng AI and TikTok, but, notes PetaPixel, the app creates videos that are formatted for social media by default, leading to some speculation that TikTok may be in Jiameng’s long-term plans.   Read the full Story >>

Books: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now

Japanese photography has traditionally been dominated by men, but a new book from Aperture turns the tables, notes The Guardian. The book, I’m So Happy You Are Here, celebrates 25 female artists, providing what Aperture calls “a much-needed counterpoint, complement, and challenge to historical precedents and the established canon of Japanese photography.” The Guardian features work from the book by artists including Hara Mikko, Kawauchi Rinko, Kawauchi Rinko, Ishikawa Mao and others.   Read the full Story >>

Call for Applications: The W. Eugene Smith Grant

W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund   Tuesday September 3, 2024

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund  is now accepting applications for its 45th annual Grant in Humanistic Photography. This year a single grant of $30,000 will be awarded. An additional $10,000 grant will be awarded as a Fellowship, and a third entry will receive a $7,500 grant as special recognition by the judges. The Smith Fund is also accepting applications for the 7th annual Eugene Smith Student Grant ($5,000). Since the Fund’s inception in 1979, it has awarded over $1.3 million to photographers around the world.   The deadline for submitting applications for all grants is October 8.   Read the full Story >>
