The famed “Roaring Lion” portrait of Sir Winston Churchill by photographer Yousuf Karsh hung on the walls of the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, Canada, for years — but in 2022 it was discovered that the iconic photo had been replaced with a copy. Now, notes CBS News, Ottawa Police say they have found the real photograph in Italy, and that the buyer is planning to hand it back over to Canada. Police said they used public tips, forensic analysis, and international cooperation to track down the thief. A man from Ottawa — whose name the police won't release due to a publication ban — was arrested on April 25, 2024.

On view through Nov. 24 at the international photography research center Le Stanze della Fotografia in Venice, Italy, is the exhibition “Whispers – A Julian Lennon Retrospective,” showcasing a body of work highlighting Julian Lennon's extensive portfolio in photography. Lennon, son on John Lennon, tells Artnet that for him, photography has “transformative” power. “It allows us to empathize with concerns that are halfway around the world, that we may never have known about,” he says.

Japan's Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) has released its July sales figures, and while July saw the most cameras sold this year, estimated sales for 2024 will be just 18 percent of what they were in 2014, notes Digital Camera World. Total camera units shipped in July were 801,240, up from 741,734 in 2023 and 725,944 in 2022. But the report reveals that DSLR units are down 38% compared to the same period in 2023. On the other hand, PetaPixel reports that Nikon sold more Z9s in the mirrorless camera’s first year than any flagship in the past 15 years.
