“It will be a great fall for photography — and for more than just 'photography,' which these days can mean almost anything,” notes The Washington Post, which highlights exhibitions opening in New York, Richmond, Virginia, and the nation’s capital that “will remind us of the glories of this lately debased medium.” Among them: “The ’70s Lens: Reimagining Documentary Photography,” at the National Gallery of Art (October 6– April 6, 2025), which will look at how documentary photography was changed by the social upheavals of the 1970s.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, is taking flak from news photographers for not providing sufficient access during her campaign, notes Axios. White House News Photographers Association President Jessica Koscielniak wrote to Harris's top aides last month protesting reduced access, noting that "the four independent news photographer seats have been downgraded to one.” Doug Mills, a veteran White House news photographer, told Axios that "the current situation puts the still photographers at a distinct disadvantage on every trip."

The Drone Photography Awards competition has revealed the nominees for its 2024 edition. ranging across nine categories—Wedding; Nature; People; Urban; Animals; Abstract; Sport; Video; and Series. A winner will be announced on September 28 at the Siena World Photography Awards ceremony at the Teatro dei Rinnovati in Siena, Italy. Instagram is adding a handful of new features to direct messages, including photo editing capabilities and stickers, reports The Verge. Users will be able to edit photos by drawing on them or adding stickers before sending them via DM, similar to editing features that already exist for Instagram Stories. The company also said users will be able to make their own custom stickers from existing photos and use them in DMs. “Put together, the photo editing tools in chats are expanding to be closer to Stories,” notes TV.
