Instead, suggests Melcher, photojournalism “should take cues from the success of video journalism, which has found new platforms to carry its message. After World War I, a striking visual language came to prominence in photography, characterized by the use of bold geometry and abstract forms. While this style is often associated with the Bauhaus, the influential German art school of the 1920s and early ‘30s, the exhibition “Photography between Chicago, Japan, and Germany, 1920–1960” — on view through September 9 at the Art Institute of Chicago—explores this modernist aesthetic as it developed through exchanges among artists from Germany, Japan, and the United States.

Projections Friday May 10, 2024
Join acclaimed photographer Howard Schatz at a live Projections event on May 14 in New York City. Schatz began his professional life in medicine—he was a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco and a retina specialist—before taking up photography. He became widely known for his images of models and dancers underwater and has gone on to photograph athletes and other subjects. The live event will take place at the PhotoShelter office at 111 Broadway, 19th floor. Time: 6:30 pm.
