Passings: Helen Marcus, Prolific Photographer of the Famous, Dies at 97

Helen Marcus, whose black-and-white portraits of literary figures and film and television personalities graced book jackets and magazine covers for decades, died on Oct. 1 at her home in Manhattan. She was 97, reports The New York Times. Marcus founded the New York chapter of the American Society of Magazine Photographers (later the American Society of Media Photographers) in 1982 and served as its national president from 1985 to 1990. As part of a 1995 assignment for Entertainment Weekly’s Fall TV preview issue, photographer George Lange created conceptual images for NBC TV shows like Seinfeld, Frasier, ER and Friends, NBC’s hot new sitcom.. For that particular shoot, which took place in Hollywood studio, Lange had a wall built containing five large geometric shapes that showcased the Friends cast members, including Matthew Perry. Media Watch: Conde Nast, Publisher of Vogue, Will Cut 5% of Its Work Force

Magazine giant Condé Nast will cut about 5 percent of its work force—thereby backtracking, notes The New York Times, on a much-ballyhooed plan to build up an in-house video studio to tap into Hollywood’s demand for film and TV ideas. The layoffs will affect about 270 employees. Roger Lynch, the chief executive of Condé Nast, told workers that the cuts were a response to digital advertising pressures, a decline in social media traffic and shifting audience behaviors, including a move to short-form video.
