Tarek Al-Ghoussein, a widely praised Kuwaiti-born photographer whose work dealt with displacement in the Middle East, died in New York on June 11, reports Art News. He was 60. Al-Ghoussein garnered acclaim both within the United Arab Emirates, where he was based, and abroad, where his work figured in international biennials. Much of his photography drew on his experience of a life lived in flux, on his position as an artist of Palestinian descent, and on the construction of the not-yet-complete Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Photographer Cristina de Middel’s ongoing project “Gentlemen's Club” focuses on prostitution’s less documented side: men who, as Magnum notes, “find themselves inextricably drawn to a fleeting encounter with a local sex worker.” For the latest installment of the series, de Middel traveled to Thailand, where prostitution and the associated industries constitute a sizable share of the nation's GDP. The Photographers’ Gallery of London has unveiled a new permanent exhibition space, situated within the streets and alleyways of its Soho home, notes the British Journal of Photography. Located just around the corner from Oxford Street station, Soho Photography Quarter (SPQ) presents a rotating program of outdoor exhibitions: large-scale banners, moving image projections, soundscapes and site-specific works.
