If you like retro, you’re going to love the PEN E-P5. But Pentax’s new flagship Micro Four Thirds PEN mirrorless camera is only old-fashioned on the outside, notes PetaPixel. Modeled
after the old Olympus PEN F SLR—Olympus is launching the new camera on the 50th anniversary of its legendary ancestor—the PEN E-P5 features 16-megapixel CMOS sensor (its ISO range is
100-25600) and 5-axis image stabilization system. The max shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second is a world’s first for compact cameras. Read the full Story >>
DP Review Friday February 7, 2020
A team of researchers with IBM
Research, MIT CSAIL and MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab has launched a new online tool called GANPaint Studio that utilizes a GAN neural network and semantic brushes to add entirely new elements into existing
images, notes DP Review. “Basically, it lets you use a 'brush' and 'paint in' different stuff into your photos. But, instead of painting in simple brush strokes, this brush paints in objects
that make sense in the context of the photo. You can 'draw' trees, domes, brick-textures, doors, windows,” adds DIY Photography. Read the full Story >>

WIRED Tuesday February 2, 2016
More so than any kind of modern technology, digital cameras have pushed retro designs into the mainstream, notes Wired. That’s certainly the case with Olympus’s newest camera. The
retro-styled Olympus PEN-F is named after the original PEN-F, which debuted in 1963, and it features old-school looks but also plenty of modern technology aimed at today’s street shooters, notes
PDN Pulse. That includes a new 20-megapixel Live MOS sensor with no low-pass filter and 5-axis image
stabilization for up to five stops of correction. There’s also a Micro Four Thirds lens mount and a 2.36-megapixel OLED viewfinder, adds PetaPixel. Read the full Story >>

This week the DART Summer Invitational,
Pimp Your Sketchbooks, resumes temporarily with a few pages of mine, while we await the next round of Q&A's. Some years ago
while I was writing a 12-book series entitled Looking at Paintings (Hyperion, 1992-1996), I spent many summer afternoons perched on a hill overlooking the lake in Central Park,
sketching. This was my summer studio (above). … Read the full Story >>

The book Brush Fires in the Social Landscape was photographer David Wojnarowicz’s extraordinary way of addressing the AIDS crisis. The collaborative project involved cameras that were
passed among members of what Wojnarowicz called his tribe—artists, critics and other friends—the way the HIV virus moved through communities. The book was first published in 1994, two
years after Wojnarowicz’s death from AIDS. Now Aperture is publishing an expanded, 20th-anniversary edition. Art News has more. Read the full Story >>

A brush with death in a car
accident inspired photographer Cig Harvey’s new book You an Orchestra You a Bomb,
recently released by Schilt Publishing. The work will also be seen at the Robert Mann Gallery in New York on December 7. “As is her
custom, the series features Ms. Harvey’s six-year-old daughter, Scout, along with other relatives and friends. And the narrative is clearly propelled by the motivations of a mother, one
enraptured by life after a near-death experience,” notes The New York Times. Read the full Story >>
Business Insider Monday November 12, 2012
Photographers will soon be the most valuable people in the newsroom, and it won't be long before they put writers out of jobs. Why? “Because, when you're on the go, the easiest stories to
consume, create, or share aren't text based,” notes Business Insider in a provocative analysis of the Hurricane Sandy media coverage. That event was, as we’ve noted, Instagram’s big
moment. But BI notes that people increasingly want to see the news, not read it. Or as Tech Crunch puts it,
“If the pen beats the sword, the camera beats the pen.” Read the full Story >>
