Dept of Ideas: A New Publishing Model for the Art Book

The business model for publishing art books has been upended by both technology and economic concerns, which is why a new publishing venture called Minor Matters Books is trying something new. Rather than create and market books, the company takes a page from Kickstarter, conceiving projects and then spending six months to accumulate a minimum of 500 pre-orders. Only after that goal has been reached does the book go into production. “While we’re not exclusively focused on photography, three of our first five projects are by photographers,” notes Minor Matters founder Michelle Dunn. One of those books, Larry Fink: Kindred Spirits, is approaching its six-month pre-order deadline on March 31
