Florian Bachleda
DART was launched in August 2006, with a logo designed by Florian Bachleda. At the time, Florian was heading FB Design, a New York design consultancy focused on consumer and corporate design. In November 2010, he took the creative helm at Fast Company. Here, on the occasion of DART’s “lucky seven,” Florian takes a DART Q&A. In addition to his original design for DART: Design Arts Daily, following is a selection of featured typography spreads from recent issues of Fast Company.
As the creative director of Fast Company, how do you spend the first hours of your day? What is the most exciting part of your week?
The first few hours of every day (usually working from home before heading in) is is making sure I'm prioritizing correctly for the day ahead. Between the print magazine, tablet, websites, events, and business divisions of our company, there's a lot to keep track of.
The most exciting part of my week are the occasional evening Art Department drinks in my Photo Director's office, which I've been trying to make a daily ritual.

As you spend most of your time directing your talented staff, do you ever miss the hands-on activity of graphic design?
Yes, very much. That would be the most nostalgic part of the week. But all of my designers are better than me, so it's all good.
How do you determine when the formats of your online/offline/mobile publications need to be nudged in a different direction?
This is something we pay attention to every day, making sure all things Fast Company speak with one visual voice. Each platform has different limitations and possibilities, so it's first understanding that, and then doing our best with each format.
Has your approach to directing photography and illustration assignments changed as quantum-leap changes in publishing have evolved?
Our approach is dictated less by technological possibilities, but rather by the ideas and the collaboration with our contributors.
If you could have a one-room getaway cabin anywhere in the world, where would it be? Who would design it? Who would you invite to visit you there?
I wish Fabien Baron could design a one-room getaway in my birth town
of Chaing Mai, Thailand. And it sounds like there will only be room for me and my cat.
