September 6-8: 30th Anniversary Armory Show at the Javits

A cornerstone of New York’s cultural landscape since its founding in 1994, The Armory Show brings the world’s leading international contemporary galleries to New York each year. Through elevated presentations, thoughtful programming, curatorial leadership, meaningful institutional partnerships and engaging public art activations, The Armory Show has played a significant role in global contemporary art. The VIP preview is September 5. Info

The fair will be divided into three main sections: Galleries, the main section, focused on twentieth- and twenty-first-century art; Solo, for one-person presentations of emerging, established, and historic artists; and Presents, which features solo- and dual-artist presentations from galleries under ten years old. A Focus section, curated by Robyn Farrell, senior curator at the Kitchen in New York, will center single- and dual-artist presentations related to the Armory Show’s first, 1994 edition; while Platform, organized by independent curator Eugenie Tsai, will feature large-scale works. A Not-for-Profit section will highlight presentations from museums and other not-for-profit organizations aimed at promoting the visual arts.

September 2-8, Salon Zürcher

The 31st Edition of SALON ZÜRCHER, a satellite fair of The Armory Show, invites a distinguished group of 11 women artists to show their work in the Zürcher Gallery space on Bleecker Street in Manhattan. Femmes d’esprit [Women o9f Spirit] was an 18th-century French term that referred to independently-minded female painters, writers, and intellectuals, routinely under-recognized by their male contemporaries and publics.

As a continuation of the project 11 Women of Spirit, which had 9 editions from 2020-2024, 100 Women of Spirit + involves the presence of the 11 participating artists: Olivia Beens, Susan Cantrick, Sue Carlson, Camille de Galbert, Brigid Kennedy, Tracy Morgan, Marykate O’Neil, Roxane Revon, Aimee Farnet Siegel, Patricia Spergel, Mary Tooley Parker. To celebrate the previous 9 editions of 11 Women of Spirit, Zürcher Gallery held the exhibition 100 Women of Spirit (June 25 - July 18, 2024) and published a book featuring each artist who has participate in the project until now.

September 4–9: SPRINGBREAK Art Show

A Contemporary Art Fair. But Like In Abandoned Spaces. But Like A Museum Show. But Like A Contemporary Art Fair. SPRING/BREAK Art Show is an internationally recognized exhibition platform using underused, atypical, and historic New York City exhibition spaces to activate and challenge the traditional cultural landscape of the art market, typically but not exclusively during Armory Arts Week New York and Frieze Week LA.

Mulching from what is becoming bygone of the institutions of contemporary society -- be they ecumenical, postal, or plenipotentiary; or, more recently, indicative of the bygone primacy of empires in publishing, weapons manufacturing, and textile -- the initiative offers in the relics of industry-free space for independent curators and low-cost space for galleries within New York City and Los Angeles landmarks, past and future. In exchange for no- and low-cost exhibition space, visionary perspectives both established and unknown are charged with engaging these areas under a unifying theme and pushed to extend the boundaries of typical market week practices, low overhead and shifting curatorial themes their assets to this end.

September 4–8 Volta Art Fair

Since 2008, VOLTA international art fair has championed emerging artists and galleries from across the globe to access key art market capitals. As a fair that presents the best of contemporary emerging artists, VOLTA features a dynamic program of talks, tours and events that explore these themes whilst posing the question “What’s Next?” in contemporary art and art collecting. Above: Synchrodogs, Supernatural, presented by Dymchuk Gallery (Kyiv, Ukraine) as part of the Ukrainian Pavilion at VOLTA New York. Under the vision of Artistic Director, Lee Cavaliere, the 2024 fairs’ curatorial focusses speak to the themes of collaboration, community and cultural dialogue, including the Ukrainian Pavilion, in association with Razom. The Pavilion showcases 6 galleries either working from the current conflict zone or from the Ukrainian diaspora that present emerging artists from the country.

September 5–8 Independent 20th Century

Independent 20th Century will feature a diverse range of approximately 65 artists, encompassing solo presentations surveying the development of an artist’s practice, women artists throughout the 20th century, Black and Indigenous artists from the Americas and beyond, and work from the 1990s. Several galleries will also honor artists whose work is being reappraised curatorially through significant institutional exhibitions, including the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia curated by Adriano Pedrosa. Above: Abdias do Nascimento, Oricha’s Mother (Mother Nature), 1971, acrylic on Canvas, 36 x 48 inch, Buffalo, New York, USA, Courtesy Galeria MaPa, São Paulo

Independent’s Founder Elizabeth Dee states, “Independent 20th Century is broadening our understanding of the canon, by showcasing key artists and movements currently undergoing reassessment in our cultural landscape. We present a platform for well informed collectors and museums who are actively engaging with opportunities to thoughtfully explore new art historical conversations. Our mission as a fair is to link the past to the present moment in contemporary art.”

September 5–8 Clio Art Fair

The name is etymologically derived from the Greek root κλω/κλεω meaning “to recount,” “to celebrate,” or “to make famous.” With a nod to its inspiration, CLIO ART FAIR has been created with the idea of showcasing the careers and achievements of already affirmed creative minds.

By specifically targeting artists without any exclusive NYC gallery representation, CLIO ART FAIR focuses its attention on the kinds of contemporary art and interventions that are being created by independent artists all over the world, since 2014. Without the constraints and usual concerns of the art business, the selected artists have been freed up to use different materials and media and to deviate from accepted art practice definitions. The resulting work being exhibited seeks to foster a dialogue that transcends prescribed geographies, hierarchies, and markets; and to further opportunities for greater expression of new media and ever ground-breaking content.

CLIO presents a special performance project, "Sugar Wrapped," which delves into the multifaceted world of transhumanism through a compelling blend of artworks and performances. The exhibition explores how technology is reshaping our understanding of the human condition, pushing the boundaries of identity, perception, and existence.  Info
