Case Study: How CNN Misrepresented A Photog's Appalachia Work

Photographer Stacy Kranitz was happy when asked if it could feature work from her project on Appalachia. The project, called “Regression to the Mean,” explores whether stereotypes accurately represent a people or place. But when Kranitz saw’s piece, she wasn’t so thrilled: It opened up with an image of a burning cross at a Klan rally, followed by a snake-handler at a Pentecostal church. “I feel ashamed and humiliated,” says Kranitz. The news website later did a re-edit. Lesson: Work with your editors whenever possible.
