In Focus: Tyler Hicks's 20-Year War Journal

By David Schonauer   Monday October 18, 2021

One of the first things New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks witnessed after arriving in Afghanistan in late 2001, soon after U.S. airstrikes opened America's invasion, was the execution of a wounded Taliban fighter by U.S.-aligned Afghan troops. The scene shocked him. But Hicks would return to Afghanistan more than 30 times over the next two decades, chronicling almost every chapter of America’s war there. The Times now brings together his work in a chronicle tracing the conflict from its beginning to its recent end.
