Books: Rahim Fortune's Pandemic Homecoming in Texas

By David Schonauer   Thursday June 10, 2021

Photographer Rahim Fortune’s father appears in only one image in Fortune’s new book, I can’t stand to see you cry, but he is the collection’s animating presence, notes The New Yorker. The portrait shows the older man propped up in bed, with an oxygen tube over his nose, gripping his son’s hand. Fortune took the picture last spring, when he returned from Brooklyn to his home town of Kyle, Texas, to help care for his father in the final months of his battle against A.L.S. He also took his camera into the streets of a city that he knew intimately.

Read the whole story at The New Yorker.
