In Focus: The Faces of Americans Living in Debt

Like many problems in America, debt is often a systemic dilemma, notes The New Yorker, which notes that more than half of all overdue debt on Americans’ credit reports is from medical bills, while 45 million people in the US carry a total of 1.5 trillion dollars in student debt. For her new book The Debt Project: 99 Portraits Across America, photographer Brittany M. Powell photographed her subjects — Americans in debt — in their homes, often in their bedrooms, and asked them to handwrite  texts about how much they owe, and to whom.
