By David Schonauer   Friday July 10, 2020

Photographer Drew Gardner is known for meticulously recreating portraits of famous historic figures by photographing their direct descendants. One of the latest images features Shannon LaNier, a news anchor who is a descendant of Thomas Jefferson and his slave Sally Hemings. La Nier is author of the book Jefferson’s Children: The Story of One American Family. “He was a brilliant man who preached equality, but he didn’t practice it,” LaNier tells Smithsonian.
