Honor Roll, 1: Yael Martinez Wins $40K W. Eugene Smith Grant

By David Schonauer   Friday October 18, 2019

Photographer Yale Martínez is the recipient of the 2019 W. Eugene Smith Memorial Grant for his project “The House that Bleeds.” The announcement was made last night in New York City. Martinez’s project focuses on the epidemic of missing persons in Mexico — presumed victims of organized crime and drug traffickers — and the impact of personal loss on families. (See this 2016 NY Times story.) Martinez will use the $40,000 grant to complete the project by photographing women who are challenging political structures in Mexico to learn the fate of their loved ones, notes PDN. UK photographer Siân Davey receives the $5,000 Smith Fund Fellowship for her project “A Poverty State of Mind.” Alicia Hansen, founder of NYC Salt, an organization that empowers underserved youth through photography, wins the $5,000 Howard Chapnick Grant for leadership.
