Passings: Jill Freedman, Who Photographed Life in the Margins, Dies at 79

By David Schonauer   Thursday October 10, 2019

Jill Freedman, who specialized in finding and photographing people on the rough margins of American life, died on Wednesday in Manhattan of complications from cancer, notes The New York Times. She was 79. Freedman “immersed herself for months at a time in the lives of street cops, firefighters, circus performers and other tribes she felt were misunderstood,” notes The Times. “My friends and relatives know I’m nuts,” she once said. “It’s obsessive. I want to tell the story and I want to get it right. God forbid I should make it easy on myself.”
