Facebook has come under scrutiny for its sometimes arbitrary censorship of content. But a recent expose at The Verge takes a look at the company’s reliance on American contract workers to moderate its platform — and the psychological price they pay for looking at violent and graphic material. “It is an environment where workers cope by telling dark jokes about committing suicide, then smoke weed during breaks to numb their emotions,” she notes.
