Time Lapse Showcase: A Tilt-Shift Look at N. Korea

By David Schonauer   Wednesday February 27, 2019

What is Pyongyang, North Korea, like?

Berlin-based filmmaker Joerg Daiber calls it “by far the weirdest and strangest place I have ever been to.”

He adds, “At the same time it's also one of the the most interesting and intriguing places and unlike anywhere else I have ever been to. You go there with 100 questions and you return with 1000!”

It’s no wonder that Daiber chose to title the five-minute time-lapse video he shot there Peculiar Pyongyang. His film captures both the weirdness and the intrigue of the place through the use of a tilt-shift effect that turns the city into an unreal-seeming model. Daiber notes that his approach was an aesthetic and not political one.

“While I have no support for the government there, many things could be said at this point about North Korea, but I really do not want to get involved in politics here, so please do your own research,” he notes.

Here is Daiber’s film:

Daiber shot his time lapse with a Panasonic Lumix GH4 and GH5 with 14-140mm and 7-14mm Lumix lenses, notes PetaPixel. Daiber made another film in North Korea, where he attended the Mass Games — which he describes as “the most incredible and amazing performance I have ever laid my eyes on.”

“Mass Games can basically be described as a synchronized socialist-realist spectacular, featuring over 100,000 participants in a 90-minute display of gymnastics, dance, acrobatics, and dramatic performance, accompanied by music and other effects, all wrapped in a highly politicized package,” notes Daiber.

Daiber’s other travelog work spotlights Shrinking Slovenia, Breathtaking Budapest, Vibrant Vienna and Crazy Capri. But nothing is as crazy as the Mass Games.
