Exhibitions: Transcendent Girls In a Patriarchal Culture

Melissa Ann Pinney, a fine art photographer and former Guggenheim fellow, grew up in the 1950s, a time, she tells The New York Times, when “[p]atriarchy was the air we breathed.” As an artist, she began creating photographs that explore female identity in patriarchal culture. Her latest exhibit, “Girl Transcendent,” which is part of a larger project spanning three decades, is on view at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center  in Hawaii until Aug. 16. “I want to show women and girls as subjects in their own lives, not as objects,” she says.
