In Focus: Rena Effendi Wins Alexia Grant for "Spirit Lake"

On the Spirit Lake Sioux reservation in North Dakota, most sex crimes go unpunished; victims of recurrent sexual abuse turn to spiritual and traditional healing to overcome their pain, notes The Washington Post, which features photographer Rena Effendi’s series exploring “the effects of trauma and the cycle of abuse in a place where poverty, chronic unemployment, addiction, depression and suicide rates are startlingly high.” The series, called “Spirit Lake,” is the winner of this year’s $20,000 Alexia Foundation professional photography grant.
