New York's Indie Booksellers 2019

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday December 6, 2017

Independent bookstores—the cultural glue that offers shelter from the storm of holiday shopping—are thriving in New York City. According to an ongoing Harvard  study, the curatorial approach that many indies take focuses on providing a more personal and specialized experience, resulting in loyal followers who participate in community programs that bring people together. And New York City offers a rare phenomenon that rivals what can be found in Paris, Berlin, and London: dedicated, art-centric free-standing bookstores selling artist books and multiples of exceptional variety.  Above: Hauser & Wirth Bookshop; photo Schenck

This year saw the opening of MoMAs expanded new bookstore in its new headquarters, with books of all art publishers along with the highly selective arty gifts and impulse buys it has become know for [below, left]. The ever expanding programs of McNally Jackson saw the opening of a highly intellectual pop-up book stand inside The Shed HQ, in the lobby of the Bloomberg Building, adjacent to Cedric's at The Shed, which is operated by Danny Meyer. In even better news: only one indie bookstore [by my count] closed. The West Village saw the last of the 35-year run of Bookbook [formerly Biography Books]. Thanks for everything, Carolyn Epstein and Charles Mullen!
