And now for a glimpse of photography’s future:

Opening today and running through April 1 at the School of Visual Arts Chelsea Gallery, 601 West 26th Street in New York City, is the annual “Mentors” exhibition, which features BFA Photography and Video student work inspired by mentorships with key figures in the New York arts community. The SVA Mentor’s program was established in 1992.

“The Mentors project fulfills our commitment to the students that, in addition to encouraging the development of each of their sensibilities, they are informed and engaged in the professional community. Working with the mentors gives them objective and professional insight into their work and helps to make their transition as artists after graduation a bit less daunting,” notes  BFA Photography and Video Chair Stephen Frailey in a statement.

The 2016-2017 mentors working with individual students include photographers, editors, curators and gallerists representing a spectrum ranging from photojournalism to fine art. They include Jennifer Blessing, senior curator of photography at the Guggenheim Museum; photographer Roe Ethridge; Aperture magazine editor Michael Famighetti; Matthew Leifheit, editor in chief of Matte magazine; Peter MacGill, founder of the Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York; Paul Moakley, the deputy director of photography and digital enterprise at Time; Elizabeth Renstrom, photography editor of Vice magazine; Hallie Ringle, assistant curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem; and Kathy Ryan, director of photography at The New York Times Magazine.
