Long before Cindy Sherman, there was Gertrud Arndt.

In the 1920s, while French artist Claude Cahun was photographing herself wearing masks to explore what she called the  “masquerade of femininity” in Paris, Arndt, a former Bauhaus student, was exploring the same themes in Weimar Germany.
