Berta Brandt came to Venezuela escaping from First World War. She's immersed in the isolation of her hackwork as elevator operator, which she evades by reading. The book looks at her through her nephew eyes. The vertical format is meant to match the elevator movement across building's floors, which represent different stages of life.
