At the Navel of the Moon
At the Navel of the Moon. 11/2014. The word "Mexico" is roughly translated as "at the navel on the moon." Inspired by Mexican photographic tradition like the work of Alvarez Bravo and Graciela Iturbide, this ongoing series is my exploration of the cultural complexities of my native country. It is meant to challenge clichés and stereotypes while promoting awareness of the surreal beauty, diversity and values of the Mexican people and culture. In this image: A young boy in mummy costume growls and roars at visitors passing by his family's mausoleum on Day of the Dead in Oaxaca's San Miguel Cemetery.
