The average lifespan of Nicaraguan sugarcane harvesters is 49. At the root of the early deaths is an epidemic - Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown causes (CKDu). Chichigalpa, known as the “Island of Widows,” is ground zero for the fatal workplace disease that's both a public health crisis & a social injustice.
