The unidentified corpses “NN”, who were victims of violence, is one of the most controversial crisis of the Bolivian medical legal system. The unhealthy environment at the crime morgue in La Paz forces its workers to operate under inhumane conditions, many times in a waste storage room. Bodies can lie unattended on the floor for months and if they go unclaimed, they are exhumed and buried in mass graves, making impossible any future identification. Human dignity no longer exists. In 2012, more than a hundred bodies were incinerated and the place was about to be closed because a formal complaint that argued the crime morgue was an environmental threat for the entire hospital population… now its situation is uncertain.
