Mirada Wayuu
The Wayuu are an Arawak indigenous community located at the Guajira peninsula, Colombia, and Zulia state, Venezuela. The Wayuu were never subjugated by the Spanish colonization and managed to survived. In more recent years they endure the ongoing war in Colombian being force to leave their land because of the violence. This photograph shows a young Wayuu girl in Cabo de la Vela, the northernmost territory in Colombia; her gaze carries on the history of the Wayuu knowledge and traditions and it also affirms the importance of their culture for the new generations. Wayuus like her are assuring the existence of their community in the future.
