Danza de las Tijeras. Photo essay in the Fall 2011 issue of Americas Quarterly. The Scissor Dance is part sport, part cultural dance from the Southern Andean region. During the ¨Atipanakuy," (Quechua word for confrontation) dancers challenge each other to overcome risky tests, demonstrating mental and physical self-control, representing both the resistance and survival of the ancient Andean civilization.
