As a great-granddaughter of the von Trapps, my family history is both public and private: personally complicated, yet also a beloved family favorite, represented in a film that had an outsized impact on the cultural memory of multiple generations. In 2020, following a change in Austrian law, I became an Austrian citizen. Finally, I had a document confirming what I’d known intrinsically as a child: I am Austrian.
In 2024, I retraced my family’s path in reverse in a spiritual pilgrimage following their immigration route from their adopted home in rural Vermont back to the home in Salzburg they were forced to leave. My images reflect my emotional state through the journey, as I returned to a homeland I never knew.
