Chronic pain is mostly invisible. Roughly 100 million Americans have chronic pain, more than have diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. January 2025. Marcus Shaefer photographed parts of the body that experience pain for a magazine feature on chronic pain. Using creative techniques to create distortions, all done in-camera, Shaefer’s photos evoke the internal turmoil and emotional toll of chronic pain.
