As a photographer drawn to the energy and emotion of human ritual, I was compelled to witness and document Thaipusam in Mumbai — a city where tradition and modernity collide in constant, fascinating tension. This Tamil festival, rooted in ancient devotion to Lord Murugan, is as much an act of faith as it is of endurance.
What struck me most was the duality: the violence of the piercings countered by the serenity on the faces of those undergoing them. Tongues and cheeks pierced, bodies adorned with hooks and weights, yet eyes closed in meditative stillness. The streets pulsed with chants, drumbeats, turmeric, and sandalwood, yet within that chaos was clarity — purpose, discipline, and transcendence.
