Police Standoff
This image is from an ongoing series on the anti-ICE protests that swept the city of Los Angeles starting in June 2025. As Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations began to surge throughout the city, thousands of protesters crowded the streets of downtown LA in revolt on Sunday, June 8, 2025. Protesters clashed with law enforcement outside the Metropolitan Detention Center, where ICE brought detainees, and were pushed back by law enforcement with rubber bullets and tear gas. The massive crowd moved to take over a section of the 101 freeway, blocking the southbound lane and prompting California Highway Patrol officers to retake the freeway through smoke and tear gas. Soon after, several Waymo cars were set on fire, and some protesters began filling plastic bags with black paint and rocks to hurl down at CHP officers on the freeway below while they fired back with less-lethal weaponry.
