Women learn to safely breast-Women gather in a small classroom to learn how to breastfeed safely, guided by instructors from the YAWE Foundation, which provides community medical care and prescribes PEPFAR-funded antiretroviral medications. Many are living with HIV or grew up without mothers lost to the disease. With consistent ARV treatment, they can prevent transmitting HIV to their babies. Amid recent U.S. aid cuts, YAWE has had to trade with other hospitals and health centers to locate ARVs for its patients, underscoring the fragility of that lifeline.
