Uncanny Valley
These are from a series I’ve been working on for a few years I am calling ‘Uncanny Valley’. The genesis of the project was by accident - while working with digital photo processing tools meant for ‘correction’ (Topaz Labs in particular) I noticed how easy it was to overdo commands like Sharpen, Denoise, etc. and it was easy to find yourself far, far from home pretty quickly. I employed it to bring out the surreal underpinnings of these images, mostly drawn from my photojournalism imagery. With the recent explosion of AI art (and the rightful backlash) I slowed down work on these images, as they could potentially be mistaken for AI generated imagery. The fact is, these are crafted images, utilizing a unique set of discovered tools, and I’m again back in the playpen for a bit.
