From Fandom to Frontline (from the series Where Do We)
"Where Do We" is a photography series capturing the spirit of South Korea’s anti-Yoon Suk Yeol protests, documenting a nation at a political crossroads. Sparked by the surprise declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024, these demonstrations persisted through the President’s impeachment and his formal removal from office by the Constitutional Court on April 4, 2025.
Recognized as a Photolucida Critical Mass 2025 Top 50 project and a LensCulture Black & White Photography Awards Finalist, this self-funded body of work explores the shifting expressions of a society confronting its own future. As a Korean American artist, I utilized a street-level perspective to process the emotional atmosphere of the protests, where raw civic frustration often met moments of surreal calm. While produced independently, the image "From Fandom to Frontline" was subsequently acquired by SisaIN (시사IN) for their "Photos of the Year" issue. These images serve as both a historical record and a reflection on an unresolved question: where do we go from here?
