Laila (they/them), receiver for the Zwolle Blue Jays, poses in the main room at House van Brienen, Amsterdam, NL, 2023. As a child, Laila wanted to play rugby, but their parents didn’t allow them to. Just after they turned 18, Laila saw a post on Facebook about the Queens Football League. Now legally an adult, their parents couldn’t stop them from joining. Aside from repeated injuries, Laila has long battled mental health issues. American football gave them a sense of purpose and provided a daily routine.

Safijja, offensive end, Utrecht Dominators, poses in the Gobelin Hall in Slot Zuylen, Utrecht, NL, 2023. Safijja works as a dental hygienist while studying to become a primary school teacher. She has a black belt in Taekwondo. American Football feels like therapy for her. She loves the simultaneous team spirit and one-on-one combat with her opponent. Safijja has had her fair share of injuries including torn ligaments in her ankle which put her out of action for two months.
