The Sum of Mark, Glenrock, NJ. November 2021. My brother spiraled out of control during a bout of mania last summer. It wasn't long before he lost his apartment and was living on the streets, a wake-up call to the severity of his illness. I poured over old photos of Mark as if the seeds of his mental illness might be found there. I traced traits and patterns in my brother's life to distant family ruptures and collaged images of Mark from various stages of his life, as if answers might arise from this alchemy of pictures when in fact the process is more an act of therapy and reconciliation.
