'Naked Athena'

Naked Athena. July 2020. An unidentified woman wearing only a hat and face mask emerged in front of riot police during a protest in downtown Portland, OR in the early morning hours of July 18, 2020. The woman, who has remained anonymous but became known as Naked Athena, approached the police line, walked back and forth, and sat in the street. Police fired munitions at her feet, at least one of which drew blood. Eventually the officers retreated, and the woman slipped away.

Portland Protest Hit-And-Run. May 2020. A driver intentionally hits a man with his car after an earlier altercation during the first night of large-scale George Floyd protests in Portland on May 29, 2020. Moments earlier, the driver had lunged his VW Golf into a crowd of marchers, where it was pummeled and some of its windows broken. He retreated in reverse, pursued by a group of protesters. The car stopped and a small fight broke out before the car again moved away in reverse, several gunshots were fired, and the driver accelerated forward back through the intersection, hitting a man who had been among the group that pursued him. This incident was a precursor to numerous vehicular assaults that would become almost common in Portland as the summer of protests progressed.
