Portland Protests. September 2020. A residential neighborhood is blanketed in tear gas following a declared riot on the 100th night of protest in Portland. After the withdrawal of federal agents from the city, protest locations began to shift from the downtown area—where the courthouse and Justice Center are—and into residential neighborhoods. Police frequently used tear gas and other chemical agents that seeped into people’s bedrooms and sometimes passing vehicles. Law enforcement agencies defended the practice, saying that scaling back on the use of chemical agents would require an increase in the use physical force.
