Portraits as Pandemic Evidence. May 2020. Masks have become the defining visual expression of the COVID pandemic. I photograph LA residents who make their way out of their homes, shelters, and hotels for ‘essentials’ during California’s lockdown order of in the early stages of the 2020 pandemic. Every street portrait in this series, this one of Olive Strahlendorf, is made in front of a black metallic boarded up store front on 5th Ave. and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles during California's Covid 'lockdown".

BLACK LIVES MATTER

Grove Shopping Centre, Los Angeles, California. Black Loves Matter. May 2020. The west side of Los Angeles, California, near the famed Grove shopping Centre, saw fiery clashes LAPD and protesters May 30, 2020 during the 3rd straight day of protests in the city during a Black Lives Matter protest following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was taken into custody for Floyd's death. Chauvin has been accused of kneeling on Floyd's neck as he pleaded with him about not being able to breathe. Floyd was pronounced dead a short while later. Chauvin and 3 other officers, who were involved in the arrest, were fired from the police department after a video of the arrest was circulated.
