Why Hospitals Can’t Handle Covid Surges: They’re Flying Blind
Alice Corral and her husband Abel were the type who were always by each other’s side—whether it was dancing in the kitchen, making Abel’s favorite pancakes on Christmas or planning their cross-country mobile-home road trip for the years ahead. Married for 37 years, they were best friends.
“Abel died on July 13th from Covid-19. Without a bed available, Mr. Corral, who was 66 and had recently tested positive for coronavirus, waited with a serious infection in Pioneers Memorial Hospital’s emergency room for 16 hours before being transferred to Scripps Green hospital in San Diego.
He later recovered from the infection but died of coronavirus complications. After experiencing the wait, Ms. Corral wishes she had just driven her husband to the San Diego hospital herself. ‘I will always feel this guilt,’ she said.”
