Hong Kong's Struggle for Human Rights
Hong Kong 2019. The Hong Kong government attempted to introduce an extradition treaty that would have allowed suspects in Hong Kong to be extradited to Mainland China which lacks a free and fair judiciary. Many Hong Kongers viewed the consequences of the treaty as an existential threat to Hong Kong and its way of life. After months of clashes with police the protestors were successful in defeating the government's attempt to introduce the bill. Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced the withdrawal of the treaty. However, protests are expected to continue into the future. Protestors have four remaining demands: appoint an independent inquiry into the police, recall of all riot charges against protestors, drop all charges against them, and universal suffrage.
