Each year, my hometown of Mobile, AL chooses 50 girls for the century-old Azalea Trail Maids. Clad in signature antebellum dresses, they appear at civic events in smiling silence, despite being selected on merit—an alluring but complicated reflection of national conversations on gender and race today.
